“High Five” Positive Rewards Plan
K-12 staff can establish a positive awards system within their classroom or just use the weekly all school Strive for Five system. This will allow the staff flexibility to give more immediate feedback and recognition to their classes. The teacher can hand out “High Five” reward cards to students who demonstrate behaviors related to the five expectations or if the student demonstrates high academic successes. The tickets will go into a bucket in the classroom and the teacher can pick daily or twice a week out of the bucket rewarding the selected student. By Friday at 1:00 all tickets from teacher buckets should be placed in the appropriate strive for five container or taken to the elementary office. A PBIS coach will do a weekly drawing and winners will be announced over the PA system for each school an award will be given. Teachers that opt to give out their own rewards may be given a yearly budget to do their ordering from -- below are ideas for prizes that do not cost money. When giving out the tickets, staff should explain to the student the behavior/expectation observed and checks and sign the “High Five” reward ticket. Staff can award a “High Five” to any student, whether they teach them or not. (Note the same system as last year is still in place there is just an add-on option for teachers to that want to reward students more frequently. The data for this decision was gathered through the last teacher survey given).
Reward Examples:
Lunchroom pass for early lunch (3 minutes early)
Homework pass (one extra day granted)
One-week front row parking pass (student of the week spot)
Earn extra computer time
Eat lunch with a teacher or principal
Enjoy class outdoors for the whole class
Consistent positive reinforcement of expected behaviors can make a big impact on the overall behavior of all students.
